Mercadona’s sustainable commitment to the agri-food sector in La Rioja has once again been a constant throughout 2023. The company’s purchases from suppliers in the region amounted to 486 million euros last year, 37 million euros more than in the previous year, which represents an increase of 8 percent.

This is possible thanks to the collaboration with 31 specialist suppliers and inter-suppliers from La Rioja, with whom it maintains a close relationship of mutual trust oriented towards joint growth and key to responding to the demands of the ‘Boss’ (as the boss is internally called). customer).

The increases in purchases of mushrooms (50%, with Ayecue-The Real Green Food and Herchamp being the main suppliers) and marzipan (more than 61 tons, with an increase of 7%, purchased from Dulces El Avión and Mazapanes de Soto) stand out. Safe).

This search for an effective assortment, with strong quality and at an unbeatable price is part of Mercadona’s brutal transformation process, which throughout 2023 has also begun with the installation of fast charging points, specifically in the Avenida de La store. Peace. 8 of the 9 stores have the New Efficient Store Model and 6 of them have their new Ready to Eat section.

At the same time, Mercadona has revalidated in 2023 its commitment to stable and quality employment by having a workforce of 517 people in Navarra. The company not only rewards the efforts of its workers with a salary that has remained above the sector average (the minimum gross entry salary is 1,553 euros/month); With the aim of guaranteeing the purchasing power of its staff, it approved a salary increase in line with the CPI (3.1 percent in Spain and 1.4 percent in Portugal), in addition to the objective bonus that is linked to the benefits of the company and that the worker has achieved the goals and objectives agreed upon at the beginning of the year with his superior.

And as an exceptional measure, an additional half bonus for improving production and management efficiency. On the other hand, in its commitment to the well-being of its staff, Mercadona has continued to support family and work conciliation. It stands out, in the case of La Rioja, that 108 people have enjoyed reduced working hours.

SOCIAL ACTION

Within the framework of its Social Action Plan, Mercadona has donated 199 tons of essential products in the region in the last year, through different initiatives. It has once again shown solidarity with the most vulnerable groups and has made a significant effort to expand its network of collaboration with social entities. Thus, it continues to collaborate daily with 6 Soup Kitchens, such as: the Food Bank of La Rioja, Cocina Económica of Logroño, Cáritas of Arnedo and Alfaro, and the Hogar Madre de Dios Residences in Haro and La Concepción in Calahorra.

The Mercadona Project is a reality that, year after year, generates significant returns for its entire agri-food chain. A reality that, as far as the supplier is concerned, has translated into the consolidation of an ecosystem in which quality is an indispensable factor. An ecosystem that is the engine of growth and development, that is committed to innovation, that carries out its activity in a sustainable and environmentally committed way, and that is focused on offering the best product so that the consumer can always get it right. And all this under a collaborative work philosophy based on relationships of trust and oriented towards joint growth, in an environment in which all links win.

In 2023, Mercadona’s purchases in Spain reached 27,142 million euros, 22 percent more than the previous year. A firm commitment to the Spanish primary sector that results in more than 85% of Mercadona’s assortment being of national origin, with products grown, fished, processed or transformed in Spain. A good example of this is that 100% of the olive oil is Spanish (Oleoestepa, Oro Bailén, Maeva, Jaencoop, Mercaóleo), as is the packaged milk (Covap, Lactia, Naturleite, Lactiber, Iparlat and Capsa), eggs (Pinilla poultry farm, Avicola Barcos y Huevos Guillén, among others) and all citrus fruits, in season, where Mercadona buys from 24 specialist suppliers.
