A total of three of the nine deaths and 11 of the 55 injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Ciego de Ávila until the end of May, are pedestrians, a fact that increases the indicator of pedestrian accidents in this province.

This was announced to this station by Sonia Hernández Talavera, executive secretary of the Road Safety Commission in the Avilanian territory, who added that in the first five months of 2024, 57 of these accidents were registered, 15 less than in the same period of the year. former.

Disrespect for the right of way, lack of attention to vehicle control, excess speed and pedestrian indiscipline are the main causes of these events in this province, where the municipalities of Ciego de Ávila and Morón are among the highest accident rate.

Hernández Talavera called on road users, especially pedestrians, to comply with the measures established in the Road Safety Code, such as always walking on the sidewalks or, if these do not exist, on the edge of the street. in the opposite direction to traffic.
