A submarine belonging to the United States arrived this Thursday, June 13, at Guantánamo Bay, in Cuba, in what appears to be a show of force in response to the visit of a Russian fleet to the Island.

According to the media ABCit would be the USS Helena, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine that arrived in Caribbean waters a day after the Russian fleet, which includes a frigate, a nuclear-powered submarine, a tanker and a rescue tug, will arrive in the Bay of Havana.

The US Southern Command indicated on its social networks that the stop of the USS Helena in the waters of Guantánamo was part of a “routine” visit.

In previous days, Pentagon officials denied that the presence of Russian vessels in Cuba represented any threat to the country, since it was only a routine exercise.

“This is not a surprise. We have seen them make this type of port stopovers before (…) Of course we take it seriously, but these exercises do not represent a threat to the United States,” said Sabrina Singh, spokesperson for said agency, when asked about the movements. Russians.

However, navigation data showed that the US and Canada were monitoring the activity of Vladimir Putin’s fleet, also mobilizing several of its ships as the Russians sailed towards the Island.

The Pentagon also acknowledged that it would not be a big surprise to start seeing more Russian activity near the United States, but stressed that these exercises are carried out in international waters.

Likewise, the agency did not rule out the possibility of Russian vessels being parked around the country during the summer and possibly winter.

The situation is perceived as tense by some analysts, since the movements of the Russian fleet were announced only a week after President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use weapons provided by the United States to attack territory within Russia and protect Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine.

Following the announcement, Putin suggested that his military could respond with “asymmetric steps” in other parts of the world, referring to third countries that have provided support to Ukraine.
