Once again, the armed conflict in the town of Madrigales, municipality of Policarpa, has generated a serious situation of displacement and confinement. At least 700 families have been affected due to combats in the rural area of ​​La Cordillera Nariñense.

The community that has not managed to leave the town remains frightened in their homes in the midst of uncertainty and only hears the bursts of rifles and permanent explosions.

It was stated that everything The commercial sector is paralyzed and for more than two weeks students have not been able to return to educational institutions.

The Governor of Nariño, Luis Alfonso Escobar, has convened an extraordinary security council with the aim of urgently addressing this humanitarian emergency.

Faced with this new crisis, a team from the Government Secretariat and the Undersecretary of Peace and Human Rights is carrying out support and care actions for the more than 3,000 people who are in a situation of confinement and forced displacement.

Furthermore, the United Nations (UN) has made an urgent call for respect for the life and integrity of the civilian population in Madrigales. In a statement, the UN said: «We urge respect for the life and integrity of the civilian population of Madrigal in Policarpa, Nariño, where fighting occurs between a non-state armed group and the public force. “We follow up.”

The Departmental Government has reiterated the call to armed groups to respect the human rights of the civilian population and to join the dialogue with peace efforts in the region.
