A few hours before your trip to SwitzerlandPresident Gustavo Petro canceled his participation in the global peace summit for Ukraine. According to the Colombian president, the conference would not contribute to the end of the war in that region of the worldwhich is why he will return to Colombia, from Sweden, this Saturday.
“While time is running out to solve the climate crisis that can end everything, here the nations, the power, is dedicated to war. What we have found in relation to the peace conference, in quotes, in Switzerland, is that it is basically an allegiance to the side of war and we do not agree with that,” he said in a statement to the media.
The head of state, who had confirmed his attendance weeks ago and even planned a bilateral meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, indicated that what should be sought is “peacebuilding.”
“I have decided to suspend my visit and the invitation to the conference in Switzerland, because Latin America does not want more war, What he wants is the construction of peace as soon as possibleboth the suspension of the genocide on the Palestinian people, and finding the difficult paths to resolve the war between Ukraine and Russia,” he added.
Finally, Petro explained that he is willing to attend other events that in his opinion allow for the consolidation of world peace.
“We are willing to participate in conferences that freely dedicate themselves to searching for the paths of peace and not to building blocks for war. We are not with war, we are with peace. So I won’t go to Switzerland, we head immediately to Colombia”, he concluded.
The president will return to Colombia this Saturday from Sweden, where he completed a four-day agenda.
