The intense rains that have fallen these days in the department of Chocó have caused serious flooding. The most recent were presented in Juradó, an area bordering Panama. Over there a large part of the homes of the indigenous community of Pichindé remained under water of the Jampabadó River.

In the El Cedral community, its residents spent the night seeking refuge in the highest parts of the area.

“Since the night, we have done the work picking up, waking up people, telling them to stay alert, because they could take our home and that is what we did, evacuate them to the highest part where they cannot reach the river“said Rubén Darío Háchito Cabrera, indigenous teacher from the El Cedral community.

In Juradó they fear that the situation will worsen if the rains continue, because the Juradó, Jampabadó and Apartadó rivers, which cross the municipality, have reached historic levels of flow.

The municipality of Juradó is affected by three phenomena: gale, flood and storm surge“said Manuel Abadía, social leader of said population.

In 14 Afro and indigenous communities, and in the municipal seat, streets, homes, crops and animals were flooded, generating a humanitarian emergency situation.

“Our municipal seat, with more than three thousand people, has been affected since last night by the whole issue of flooding, merchants losing belongings, merchandise, our schools and institutions have been affected by strong gales“said Denio Jiménez, mayor of Juradó.

Local authorities have made an urgent call to the departmental and national governments to provide humanitarian aid to assist the affected population.

The governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, through her X account, reported that in municipalities such as Nuquí and Istmina and Riosucio there are also some emergencies and that all actions are already being carried out to address them.

In Bojayá, a boat carrying 21 people capsized. In Atlántico, Cesar and Tolima there were also emergencies due to the rains.
