Sunday, June 16, is set as Father’s Day in Chile, a holiday that has legal recognition and is widely recognized nationally. However, there are two dates for this commemoration, one commercial and the other official.
The origin of this commemorative day dates back to the beginning of the last century (1900) in the United States.. The initiative is attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd, who proposed celebrating the birthday of his father, an American Civil War veteran, as a way to pay tribute to him. This date was gaining popularity in the North American country, and spread to other nations.
In Chile, Father’s Day is officially celebrated on June 19, in accordance with Decree 1,110 of 1976, in recognition of the significant value of the family for Chilean society. However, it will be celebrated on June 16 in 2024.
Why will Father’s Day be celebrated on June 16 in Chile?
This is due to commercial reasons, since this date is about adjusting to the third Sunday in June. Furthermore, the official date falls on a weekday, making it much more complex to celebrate, being a Wednesday in the case of 2024.
