Momentary and limited relief from blackouts: Felton is back in business

The Unit 1 of the Felton thermoelectric plant (CTE)in Mayarí, province of Holguín, started this Saturday June 16 around 3:20 in the afternoon and it returns to generate the national electrical energy system (SEN) after several days out of service due to a breakdown.

The Facebook profile of spokesperson Emilio Rodríguez Pupo stated that the unit generated 150 MW at 5:00 PM and continued to progressively increase its load.

On Thursday the 13th, Felton suffered a boiler breakdown that caused new and prolonged blackouts, especially in the eastern region of the country, as DIARIO DE CUBA was able to verify.

The failure was due to another “puncture” in the tubes on the left side wall of the boiler, just over three meters high, according to plant engineers.

Apparently the week starts with certain and limited energy relief for Cubans. Lázaro Guerra, director of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, said in Saturday’s report from the Electrical Union that generation levels were increased with the reincorporation of units 3 of the Carlos M. de Céspedes de Cienfuegos and 6 of Mariel.

Also in the afternoon another backup for peak hour starting at the entrance of unit 5 of Nuevitas with 80 MW, unit 6 of Rente with 60 MW.

Felton 1, which generates more than 200MW and is one of the most stable plants on the Island, was under maintenance throughout the month of May, which generated blackouts of up to more than 20 hours a day in some territories. The authorities had assured that this technical intervention would improve its operation. Nevertheless, This is his second breakdown so far in June.
