Havana, June 16.– The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources of Cuba issued a report on the behavior of rainfall and reservoirs in the country between June 6 and 12, 2024.

Regarding rainfall, according to the report, 53.7 mm accumulated in the country and 28% of the historical average for the month of June (195.0 mm). The western provinces have averaged 96.0 mm (42%), the central provinces 42.9 mm (21%) and the eastern provinces 29.6 mm (20%).

In provinces such as Artemisa (149.8 mm; 70%), the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud (128.3 mm; 57%), Pinar del Río (107.7 mm; 48%), Havana (82.5 mm; 40%) and Mayabeque (80.1 mm; 32%), heavy rainfall has caused rivers and dams to overflow, and damage numerous homes, roads and bridges.

The highest municipal accumulations occurred in Candelaria (Artemisa; 265.3 mm; 115%), Artemisa (Artemisa; 175.8 mm; 83%), San Cristóbal (Artemisa; 172.1 mm; 74%), La Palma (Pinar del Río 170.8 mm; 69%) and Los Palacios (Pinar del Río; 158.2 mm; 77%).

The volume of water retained in the country’s reservoirs on the morning of June 12 was 4803.80 million m3 (52% of the national capacity), which represents an increase of 101.41 million in relation to the volume impounded on the morning of June 6th.

The provinces with the highest fills with respect to provincial capacity are: Santiago de Cuba (75%), Holguín (74%), Granma (71%), Las Tunas (62%), and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud ( 62%).

The largest provincial increases are reported in Pinar del Río (47.64 million), Granma (13.13 million), Holguín (10.75 million), Artemisa (10.02 million) and Santiago de Cuba (8.43 million) . The largest specific increases correspond to: Los Palacios (Pinar del Río; 8.61 million), Cuyaguateje (Pinar del Río; 8.37 million), El Salto (Pinar del Río; 4.97 million), Birán (Holguín; 4 .89 million) and Ramírez (Pinar del Río; 4.65 million).

Taking into account these hydrometeorological conditions, it is necessary to reach the people most likely to be affected to help reinforce their homes or their evacuation and avoid material or human losses, and not minimize any risk to avoid more complex scenarios. These constitute work priorities to confront the effects of the intense rains in the country.
