The National Ballet of Cuba (BNC) will celebrate on stage the 10 years of collaboration with the British friends of the institution, a relationship that it describes as beneficial, according to a press release released by the company.

Under the direction of prima ballerina Viengsay Valdés, the BNC will offer six performances in the Sala Avellaneda of the National Theater in Havana on July 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 14.

The note highlights that the link with the British friends of this dance group has led to the incorporation of works by world-famous choreographers to its repertoire.

On stage they will perform the work “Celeste”, the first creation, choreographed by Annabelle López Ochoa with music by Tchaikovsky, presented in 2014.

Also an absolute premiere: the ballet “Lucile”, conceived especially for the BNC by the Danish dancer and choreographer Johan Kobborg, responding to a request from Viengsay Valdés.

The performances will take place at the usual times: Thursday to Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. local time.

The press release points out that “Lucile” constitutes an evocation of the figure of the great Danish dancer Lucile Grahn, an emblematic figure of the Romantic Era.

The music is by Gavin Sutherland, based on compositions by Jules Massenet; the costumes, by Natalia Steward; the set design, by Johan Kobborg himself; and the lighting design, by Joey Walls.

Kobborg is well known to Cuban audiences for his performances at the Havana International Ballet Festivals, in 1998 and 2004, as well as for performances by the Royal Ballet (United Kingdom) in Cuba, in 2009.

In his brilliant career as a dancer he has received international recognition and has been a leading figure in the Royal Danish Ballet and the Royal Ballet.

In 2006 he received the Lawrence Olivier Award for his production of “La sylfide”; and the premiere of his version of “Romeo and Juliet” at the Verona Arena, Italy, in 2019, achieved resounding success.

Tickets for upcoming BNC performances will be on sale at the National Theater box office starting July 2, Tuesday to Saturday, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.
