Martha Jiménez, a passionate about Traditional Bambuco, and her husband participated in the Municipal Exhibition of Traditional Bambuco for Children and Adults in Neiva. Through this celebration, the tradition and legacy of Faustino Sandoval Melgar, one of the most prominent exponents of traditional bambuco in Huila, is honored.
“Traditional Bambuco is the father of Sanjuanero Huilense, that’s where it came from,” mentioned Martha Jiménez, who has been performing in various cultural settings for 43 years, dancing Traditional Bambuco. She, along with her husband Norberto Medina, participated last night in the Municipal Exhibition of Traditional Children’s and Adult Bambuco, within the framework of the 63rd version of the San Juan and San Pedro Bambuco Festival in the city of Neiva.
“For me this event is very important, because Traditional Bambuco has been fundamental because it has opened many doors for me to get to know myself and my husband, with whom I have performed…This is a family legacy, because with a daughter we are going to participate in the departmental bamboo,” Martha told LA NACIÓN.
Present and future of tradition
4 couples of children and 7 couples of older adults participated in the event, who were in charge of bringing joy to those attending the ‘Jorge Villamil Cordovéz’ Music Park, performing the steps of this traditional dance to the sound of bambucos.
Although this event seeks to keep alive the memory of those dances of the grandparents since the beginning of the festivities, and is a showcase for their youngest or youngest dancers, who seek to keep the history of this dance current, the attendance by Neivans to the event, was very low, thus tarnishing an important celebration for Opita folklore.
Traditional Bamboo
The traditional bambuco incorporates three steps and three figures. The steps are dragged, pinch and Páez; The figures are invitation, eights and chased. The entire wonderful ensemble integrates elements from different regions of Huila or techniques depending on the ethnic group.
Faustino Sandoval Melgar, born in Villavieja, north of the department of Huila, was one of the most prominent exponents of the hall hall and traditional bambuco. In fact, he is considered to have been the most classical and authentic of traditional dancers. In his honor, the Children’s, Youth and Adult Meeting of the traditional bambuco dance was established, during the festivities of San Juan and San Pedro de Neiva and Huila.
