After the arrest of 10 gendarmes for arms trafficking and other acts of corruption in prisons, The Minister of Justice, Luis Cordero, assured last night that there are more complaints that are being investigated in the Gendarmerie.

In statements to CNN Chile, Minister Cordero expressed that there are more complaints about cases of corruption in the penitentiary institution and that “there are investigations that are also currently being developed and that are in process.”

The Gendarmerie is sufficiently clear that one of the ways in which criminal organizations expand is not only by committing their crimes, but also by corrupting officials.and that one of the places of risk is usually penitentiary centers, and that is why it has a plan for that purpose,” Cordero said.

Among those detained there are 9 active gendarmes and one retired. The 14 defendants will be formalized today, Tuesday, in the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago.
