‘La dulce sanjuanada’ turns 50 and pays tribute to its beginnings

The ‘sweet sanjuanada’, with which Santo Domingo de la Calzada celebrates the festival of San Juan Bautista, turns half a century this year. For this reason, the Festivities Department of the town’s City Council has expanded the program of events “in order to to return, in a certain way, to the origin of this celebration. “We wanted to go back to what was typical of that time.”

Among these activities, the “innovative” San Juan parade of the giants and the big heads on the 24th stands out, as well as the tribute that the City Hall will pay to the women “who started this sweet distribution and who continue to accompany us to this day.”

Therefore, the events will begin on the 23rd with the performance of the ‘Dúo Estallido’ at 8:30 p.m. in the Plaza de La Alameda, who will delight the public with a varied repertoire of Spanish songs from the 80s, rancheras, boleros , etc. In addition, during the performance there will be a tasting of zurracapote with pasta that will be distributed by the members of the sweet sanjuanada commission.

And finally for that day, the brass band ‘Los Gallitos’ will be in charge of setting the rhythm with a cheerful parade until the time of the traditional bonfire of San Juan that this year will be held again in the Plaza de España, in the same format that the past and will be completed with a small fireworks display.

The events of the 24th will begin in the morning with the new San Juan parade of the giants and the big heads. And in the afternoon, the epicenter of the party will be the Plaza de La Alameda, where there will be no shortage of music by ‘Dido’, there will also be children’s games and workshops and the traditional distribution of chocolate.
