The specialist from the delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in Ciego de Ávila, Zulima Díaz, stated that the objective is to adapt to climate changes to reduce vulnerabilities in natural spaces of great importance for tourism development in the region.

Among the results, the recovery of more than 10 kilometers of beaches with sand covering, in areas of the Coco, Guillermo and Paredón Grande keys, was highlighted, an action aimed at mitigating the effects of erosion and increasing the bathing area, to offer a higher quality product.

There is also the rehabilitation of the coastal dunes by planting native plants, the extraction of other invasive exotics and the construction of wooden walkways, which prevents the compaction of the mounds, recognized as a natural barrier against extreme hydrometeorological events.

The initiative is also aimed at training workers in hotel, non-hotel and tourism support facilities, with the aim of providing knowledge for efficient management of coastal ecosystems and increasing the perception of risks associated with climate change.

The specialist pointed out that these actions, governed by the Center for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity, are focused on promoting the development of sustainable tourism in Jardines del Rey, among the most striking sun and beach destinations in Cuba.

He added that the Avilanian tourist region is included in an international project aimed at integrating the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and the mitigation of climate changes in vulnerable marine-coastal areas, through the design and establishment of innovative models with capabilities and strengthened financial mechanisms.
