Diario La Rioja: Milei’s return

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, arrives this Friday in Madrid where the president of the Community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will award him the International Medal and then receive the Juan de Mariana Prize, and travel on Saturday to Hamburg where he will receive the award of the Hayek Society, before moving to Berlin. Díaz Ayuso claims that he has been awarded the medal in honor of Argentina’s historical ties with Madrid. So the tribute would be directed to that country, and not to the person of its current president. Which would be outside the regional regulations that regulate such recognitions. In the midst of the escalation of nonsense in which the Argentine president has become involved with President Pedro Sánchez based on some offensive statements by Minister Óscar Puente, with Milei calling him a coward on the eve of his second trip to Spain. It is to be hoped that the president of Argentina does not take advantage of his hours of stay in our country to continue provoking the indignation not only of the Spanish Government but also of public opinion. May he cease his efforts to naturalize habits that have no place in relations between democratic countries or in the growing coexistence between their nationals. But it is essential that the president of the Community of Madrid does not lend herself to covering up or justifying any inappropriate statement by the Argentine president. Who will have the opportunity to reconsider by expressing whatever ideas he defends, as long as he does not seek to directly offend Spanish authorities and, to that extent, the dignity of the Spanish people.

It is disheartening that the ties between Spain and Argentina are resented by ideological animosities that end up exacerbating personal animosity between public officials whose first obligation is to also reason about their differences. Although the worst thing is that unreason seems to have become a deliberate strategy aimed at escalating confrontation both within each country and at the international level. So each person believes they can gain a foothold in their positions by searching for that adversary who is most useful for their efforts. In the event that Javier Milei goes beyond his limits in his demonstrations in Madrid, it is essential that the Government restrains itself by showing its displeasure if it does not see itself capable of overlooking the provocation.
