Learning to make hair ribbons using techniques typical of the Andean culture is a unique experience that you can access from
free and online thanks to the financing of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage through its Support Program for
Collaborating Cultural Organizations.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 6:30 p.m., the Fonck Museum will hold the “Hairband, pompoms, and barrel” workshop online (ZOOM), aimed at people ages 16 and up.

Thanks to this activity financed by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage through its Support Program for Collaborating Cultural Organizations, participants will be able to learn how to make a utilitarian object, in this case a hair band, inspired by the Andean culture. It should be noted that in the Central Andes area, women use these ribbons to decorate their braids and indicate cultural belonging to certain groups.

Through this workshop, you will be able to recognize hair bands as a textile artifact typical of Andean textile techniques, make a hair band inspired by ancestral weaving techniques, in particular a type of Andean braiding using 4 strands and you will know which ones They are the Andean finishings, such as the incorporation of two-color pompoms and the barreling technique.

The 90-minute cultural initiative, which will be led by Renata Martinic Birkner, has limited spaces, therefore, it is recommended

Regarding the required material, attendees must have: wool (natural or synthetic) or cotton thread, fine or medium thickness, 2 colors
contrasting. In addition, the material will have to be previously cut in the following way: 4 strips of 1.5 meters of one color and 4 strips of 2 meters of another color. (There are 8 strips in total).

On the other hand, they must also have a type “C” vise or some type of anchor to a table or wall (eyebolt, nail, etc.), scissors (ideally made of fabric or with a good sharpness), resistant sewing thread, measure or ruler and needle according to the thickness of the wool or thread.

Fonck Museum is part of the Support Program for Collaborating Cultural Organizations of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, which seeks to strengthen and provide continuity to private and non-profit cultural institutions and organizations. This program is also part of the Financing System for Organizations and Cultural Infrastructure of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage that integrates, articulates and coordinates in a transversal way the plans, programs and funds aimed at the promotion and support of organizations, cultural infrastructure, and artistic mediation. All this with a decentralized vocation, participatory mechanisms, and the promotion of the creation of networks and associations.
