The pharmacies of Córdoba have decided to take an active role in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer in the province. This collaboration includes the offer of intraining and advice on measures to identify possible signs or symptoms of breast cancer, as well as the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and physical exercise as preventive tools.

The College of Pharmacists of Córdoba, in addition to these efforts, will encourage women at risk to participate in the screening program of breast cancer in the public health system in Andalusia. This campaign is a joint effort to increase participation in early detection and, therefore, improve treatment and survival outcomes for affected women.

Goals

To achieve these objectives, the collegiate headquarters has hosted the course ‘Care for patients with breast cancer in community pharmacy’. This course is part of the Health Campaign for Breast Cancer Screening in Pharmacies and has been developed in collaboration with the Reina Sofía University Hospital and the different Health Health Districts of Córdoba.

Nearly a hundred registered pharmacists from Córdoba attended the course, taught by experts from the Reina Sofía University Hospital. This knowledge will allow pharmacists to play a crucial healthcare role in the optimization and safety of treatments, guaranteeing continuity of care for patients.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among Andalusian women

During these talks, topics such as the organization and results of the breast cancer screening program in the province of Córdoba, the diagnostic process, surgery, and oncological and radiotherapy treatment were discussed. These sessions were instrumental in improving the understanding and management of breast cancer from a comprehensive perspective. Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among Andalusian women, with more than 6,000 new cases diagnosed annually in the community.

Although it is currently not possible to prevent the onset of the disease, early detection can significantly improve prognosis and increase survival. Detection in early stages allows treatment to be more effective, reducing the impact of cancer on patients’ lives. In this context, collaborative and coordinated practice between health professionals is crucial. Pharmacists, by being in direct contact with the community, can play a vital role in promoting public health and preventing diseases. Their involvement in the early detection of breast cancer is an important step to improve comprehensive care for patients.

The campaign also highlights the importance of comprehensive and coordinated care, where all healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, collaborate to optimize the use of medicines and promote public health. In this case, the prevention and early detection of breast cancer are the main focus, with the aim of saving lives and improving the quality of life of affected women.
