Controversy over the road tax in Regina: “One billion pesos are needed,” maintains the ruling party

The project for the implementation of the road tax in Regina entered last week Deliberative Council. The initiative, presented by the Executive, differs from the rest of those implemented in several cities of Neuquén and Río Negro: The proceeds will be used to repave the streets.

Listen to Maximiliano Garré, president of the Deliberative Council, on RÍO NEGRO RADIO:

The project was referred to committees this Tuesday to be discussed soon by the legislative body. However, Its treatment is not without controversy.

Maximiliano Garrépresident of the Deliberative Council and reference of the local ruling party, told BLACK RIVER RADIO the details of the project: «In Regina we do not have public transportation, as if other cities have approved the rate—among them Cipolletti. But we are faced with a very complex situation and a destruction of the existing pavement.«, he began explaining.

In that sense, he argued that the creation of this fuel tax was a “fair and equitable solution«. According to the numbers managed by the municipality, they need one billion pesos to fine-tune the current roads. The figure only includes repaving and does not imply the addition of new blocks.

He detailed the case of the Belgrano neighborhood, where the streets have asphalt that is more than 30 years old. «There he fulfilled his useful life. Today, paving a single street costs 25 million pesos, which would imply a frontage charge of 2 million pesos.«.

Regina road tax: what the project entails

The project involves charging a rate of 4.5% on the value of a liter of fuel (tax not included). Today it would be equivalent to a cost of 24 to 25 pesos per liter. To fill a tank (50 liters) would represent an additional cost of 1250.

“Whoever uses the roads the most is the one who has to contribute the most”Garré insisted. Likewise, he assured that given the poor state of the city’s infrastructure “many have seen with good eyes” the project.

If approved, the regulations would have a validity of 48 months. That is the time calculated to raise the funds needed.
