Demolition work of the deck slabs on the Macaca bridge, in Media Luna, is taking place these days, as part of a resuscitation process that will improve and facilitate road safety, with a maximum weight of up to 40 tons in vehicular transportation, between the municipalities of Manzanillo and Niquero.

This was stated to the press by Benito Reyes González, specialist in Road Engineering Works of Brigade 5, Celia Sánchez Manduley Contingent, of the Construction and Assembly Company (Coingex) Granma, who pointed out that of the 70 meters of
long and 14.50 meters wide, 23.50 meters are undergoing rehabilitation in its structure and support.

He added that after this first stage, a brigade from Santiago de Cuba will carry out the firmament work with the placement of eight piles and the casting of a reinforcement beam, which will provide high safety standards in its infrastructure.

“The main cause has been the sinking of its piles due to the bridge not having stability on the ground. Of the six meters high of the bridge, two belong to the waters of the Macaca River, which causes its waters to push aggressively, since it flows downstream and has no slopes or mouths into dams,” he explains.

He says that despite the impact of the blockade, they are looking for alternatives to avoid stopping the work, which involves mechanized equipment such as bulldozers, excavators and multipurpose machines.

“The intense summer heat and rain do not prevent the seven workers, mostly young people, working up to 12 hour days, from intensifying actions to restore vitality to the bridge, the main viaduct for the economic, productive and tourist activity of this area of the Granma territory”, he highlights.
