Arrest in San Jose for alleged arson The Sonora newspaper

A man was arrested Tuesday in San Jose for his alleged involvement in setting several fires, authorities said.

One of the fires started around 9 a.m. on Berryessa Road. A couple of hours later, three more larger fires occurred near Watson Park and Highway 101.

“I saw a lot of black smoke. It was over this area, a lot of black smoke,” said San Jose resident Hannah Tuli.

Police reported that the initial call reported multiple fires set by one person. An officer found the suspect when iHe was trying to start another fire, and was arrested.

Investigators are examining which of the fires the arrested man could be linked to. There have been several fires in the South Bay this month.

One of the most recent fires occurred on June 16, when firefighters extinguished a vegetation fire near Highway 101 at Oakland Road. Another fire broke out Monday near Highway 85 and Santa Teresa. Both fires generated a lot of smoke, putting firefighters at risk and threatening homes and schools.

“For someone to do this is wrong. This is our community, we take care of it,” said Tuli.
