Although all day this Wednesday the attention to the winter tragedy has been focused on three municipalities – Venecia, Fredonia and Abriaquí – the truth is that during the current rainy season throughout the department of Antioquia there have been presented at least 262 emergencies related to precipitation.

These have been addressed in the first instance by the municipal risk management councils and in many cases they have had the help of Dagran (Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia), an entity that reports that until now 4,451 families are affected (figure given at the end of this Wednesday afternoon) and have delivered more than 1,500 humanitarian aid kits.

The damage to the roads has also represented a challenge for the Infrastructure Secretariat, which is attending to 69 critical points to enable roadways, according to the head of that department, Luis Horacio Gallón, who accompanied Governor Andrés Julián Rendón on his visit to Venice.

In relation to Venice, Fredonia and Abriaquí, the official indicated that in those three locations there had been yellow machinery from the Department since last week and this played in their favor to attend to the present emergencies in a timely manner.

According to Gallón, between Frontino and Abriaquí there have been about 15 landslides and there are machinery and personnel who have maintained the Abriaquí-Frontino and Abriaquí-Cañasgordas road sections.

In taking stock of the latest emergencies, Governor Rendón reported that the El Cinco sector of the road between Fredonia and Venice will be closed while mitigation work is carried out, after the establishment of the bank at km 1+000. In the same way, on that same road, the removal of the earth that has been blocking the passage as a result of the landslides has been carried out.

The recommendation to get to Venice is to take alternate routes such as the Bolombolo-Venice section. It is worth remembering that in that coffee-growing town in the Southwest, the rains that fell between Tuesday night and dawn this Wednesday left 108 families affected, of which 30 were affected by serious damage to their homes. In addition, four people were injured and two people are still missing. The flooding of the La Galápagos and La Tigra streams was relentless as a sudden flood occurred and the riverbed overflowed.

In Abriaquí, there were three deaths, including two minors and one adult, after an avalanche that occurred in the Potreros village, while in Fredonia there were three people missing in the middle of a landslide on the Cerro 3 road.

The Mayor’s Office of Venice has enabled two bank accounts so that those who want to collaborate with the restoration of normality in the affected families can make their contributions.
