Coup attempt defeated in Bolivia › World › Granma

The Bolivian nation experienced, this Wednesday, a new episode of coup d’état, aborted a few hours later by the popular mobilization in favor of President Luis Arce Catacora, in the capital and in other cities of the country.

A military chief, replaced from his duties this week, led the coup, which involved other military officials and war teams.

On behalf of Cuba, a people of solidarity with extensive ties of brotherhood with those Latin American lands, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, denounced the attempts to subvert the popular will through an action military against the Constitution of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, which would have serious consequences.

Through several messages on the social network x offered his support to the Bolivian President. «The attack on democracy and the Bolivian people shown in the images of international media this afternoon in Bolivia is outrageous. We repudiate the attempted coup d’état underway and extend all the solidarity of the Cuban Government and people to brother Lucho,” wrote the Head of State.

Once the attempt was frustrated, he welcomed the withdrawal of the coup troops from Plaza Murillo in La Paz, pointing out that “another military coup in Bolivia would be a new affront to Latin America.”

During the turbulent afternoon of this Wednesday, the Bolivian president declared that democracy would be respected. General Juan José Zúñiga, coup leader, was arrested along with other soldiers involved in the incident, which occurred after the Attorney General’s Office initiated criminal proceedings against him.

After his arrest, Zúñiga, who is now being investigated for the alleged crimes of terrorism and armed uprising, was taken to a unit of the Special Force to Fight Crime (Felcc), in La Paz, the Sputnik site reported.
