How is Valle del Cauca preparing for COP16?

COP16 will bring together more than 190 countries, observer organizations, youth groups, civil society, academia and the general public to negotiate and discuss the importance of protecting and restoring nature through 23 goals for 2030 and four objectives for 2050.

Colombia will be the host country after Turkey renounced hosting the event due to the emergency suffered by the 2023 earthquakes.

The objective of this high-level environmental meeting is to address the loss of biodiversity, restore ecosystems, share benefits fairly and equitably, and protect the rights of indigenous peoples.

The governor of Valle del Cauca, Francisca Toro, in dialogue with Mañanas Blu, with Camila Zuluaga, provided details of how the department is preparing for the international event.

He revealed that he has requested a personal audience with the national government to address the security challenges facing Valle del Cauca. The request was made by all the vital forces of the department, including unions, universities, social organizations and mayors.

Regarding COP16, the visit carried out by the UN to evaluate security at the event stood out. In addition, the national government has guaranteed the presence of four thousand police officers in Cali and the metropolitan area during the event to guarantee the tranquility of the participants.

However, the governor expressed concern about the withdrawal of the military and police after the event and the possible lack of security afterwards.
