Senator Órdenes called for a meeting of all Aysén stakeholders in response to the negative variation in regional GDP

Aysén learned about the report on the Regional Gross Domestic Product released by the Central Bank, corresponding to the first quarter of 2024. In contrast to the remarkable growth of 2.3% at the national level, the region showed a variation of -9.7%, this being the lowest in the country. The senator for the Aysén region, Ximena Órdenes Neira, was blunt in her assessment of this data, however, she assured that this must be the turning point that brings together the different actors in the region in order to achieve the development to which Aysén aspires.
Aysén.- “A drop in the regional Gross Domestic Product -GDP- of -9.7% is practically saying that the Aysén region is in recession,” stated the parliamentarian, at the same time that she maintained: “I think it is time to not only to build a ‘target image’ of the Aysén region, to not only talk about the development we want, but to establish a concrete alliance between the public sector and the private sector to move the region forward.”
“We have historical problems and we know them, such as connectivity, centralism, which, without a doubt, are variables that have conditioned our development, but it is time to get active and that starts at home,” said Órdenes, noting that it is not helpful to continue insisting on the problems that the region has recognized from the beginning, but that it is time to act.
The representative in the Senate of the Aysén region insisted that “based on this, which is bad news, I would like to call for all actors, who are in different areas of action, but with the same interest, Let’s set a turning point”, emphasizing that “this is a turning point” and maintaining again that, “a meeting must be held, necessary to talk not only about what we want and what we dream, but to see how we concretize it and we make it operational.”
It is worth remembering that GDP is an international indicator that accounts, among other variables, for the consumption of goods and services carried out by households, for example, food. Also, the investment made by both companies and individuals in the development of projects, in contrast to the expenditure made by the Executive.
At the national level, 15 regions showed growth, while Aysén registered negative figures both in household consumption (-1.0%) and in the other section, which, according to the issuing institution, is a decrease that had its origin in the decrease in fishing activities.
