The first viewer of the Oscar-winning film was Steven Spielberg by chance, but it was a magical experience for its director

With a collection of 960 million dollars and more than six months being shown in movie theaters, it is clear that many viewers have enjoyed Oppenheimer, the excellent film that earned Christopher Nolan his first Oscar and that was the brand new winner of the 96th edition of the Hollywood Academy Awards. Now, exactly eight months after its debut in cinemas, the feature film can be enjoyed streaming, as part of the SkyShowtime platform catalogue.

However, long before his most successful film hit theaters, Nolan had the opportunity to show it to someone very special to him. And it is that the first viewer of Oppenheimernot counting those responsible for the study, was none other than himself. Steven Spielberg. An anecdote that the director himself, full of pride, took it upon himself to share with the world.

According to Christopher Nolan in statements to Associated Press last February, Spielberg’s viewing occurred formally by chance: the veteran director had called Nolan to talk about something that had nothing to do with Oppenheimer –but we would love to know what it is about – and, right at the same time, the 70 mm copies of the film had arrived. An opportunity served on a plate.

“When I first got the 70mm print I showed it to Steven Spielberg,” Nolan said in a joint conversation with the director of Dune Denis Villeneuve.

He had called me about something else and I had also just received the copy and had not shown it to anyone. I mean, the studio had seen it. But we projected it for him. I sat behind him and watched him watch the movie. It was an extraordinary experience

“He said very nice things”

And what did Steven Spielberg think of Oppenheimer? “He said some very nice things, but the best thing was seeing him look”declares the filmmaker, who seems to want to reserve this special moment for himself.

“He told me he absolutely loved it,” Villeneuve noted.

“I wasn’t even supposed to see it with him, but seeing the grandmaster watching it? It was irresistible,” Nolan said.

Another unforgettable moment for Nolan, who with Oppenheimer He has been able to experience one of the most magical moments of his career as a filmmaker.
