Nathan Fillion will play Guy Gardner in superman by James Gunn, and the actor shares his approach to the iconic DC hero.

The former star of Firefly is one of the big names that includes the cast of the first official film of the new DCU, led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Although we will have an exclusive Lantern project in series form, with the introduction of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Gardner will be the first member of this great legacy to reach the screen as part of this new chapter for the franchise built by DC Comics and Warner Bros. Discovery. So, for Fillion, it is a big responsibility.

Speaking with Collider, the actor spoke about what it means for him to play this character and what his version will be like:

«The reality is that people have defects. We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities. You could have the most wonderful family, but saying, 'Oh my God, my dad drives me crazy.

Everyone has something and I love focusing on those flaws and flaws. It's what makes people real and what allows the audience to relate to it, because we all know what it is. We all are. We witness it in other people.

It's 90% defective and you don't care. That is one of its defects. I think there's a real freedom in interpreting that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and people with flaws, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.”

A bond beyond Superman and Green Lantern

Fillion already has a long history of collaboration with Gunn, so it was no surprise to anyone that the actor joined the project that will mark the new direction of the DC universe. And it's something he's grateful for:

“We were actually at the premiere party after The Suicide Squad and he was in a big crowd of people. We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him: 'oh my God, that was amazing. It's great'. And he said to me: 'Hey, Peter [Safran] Did he tell you what we have next for you?' I said, 'No, he hasn't.' He looked around as if someone was listening, but he leaned in and said, 'You're going to be Guy Gardner.'”

In addition, he confessed that despite being a fan of several comic book characters, what Gunn has achieved with the saga of Guardians It's something you never imagined:

«I used to collect comics. I had a comic book rack in my room that you could spin around. I remembered Guardians of the Galaxy and I remember that I couldn't relate to it in any way. I just couldn't get into it.

For some reason, Spider-Man had something for me. There was something about Batman that I really liked. The X-Men, I couldn't get enough. But those movies moved me. And not just cry, but feel joy, feel connections and feel love. It's a lot about family.

I think that's what James Gunn does best. He says he's thinking about something else, and that's what we're all thinking about. And he just does it so much better and he does the things that matter to all of us.”
