The three films were a success but we hadn’t heard from the franchise for so long that it seemed like it wasn’t going to go any further.

disney has decided to resurrect a science fiction franchise that seemed dead and buried. After all, ‘The Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ was released in 2018 and since the studio acquired Fox it was only said a long time ago that there was an intention to make more films in the saga. Well, it seems that that forgotten promise is finally going to be true.

A continuous reboot

The Hollywood Reporter points out that 20th Century Studios has launched a reboot of ‘The Maze Runner’ which is neither going to be a repeat of what we already saw in the first three installments nor a direct sequel to them. Yes, it is expected to be a continuation that recovers elements of that one, but everything indicates that a completely renewed cast will be chosen.

It remains to be seen if they plan to use something from the other novels in the saga written by James Dashner. On the one hand there are two novels set several years before what is seen in ‘The Maze Runner’ and on the other a trilogy of which only two novels have been released that works as a spin-off and is set 73 years after the events seen in ‘The Death Cure’.

For now, 20th Century Studios has chosen Jack Paglen (‘Transcendence’) to write the script. I imagine that they will first want to see if they have material up to the mark before starting to make other signings, but it is known that Wesballdirector of the first three installments and who will release ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ in a few days, will serve as producer.

What is evident is that At Disney they know that it is a world worth continuing to explore.. After all, the first three films cost a total of 157 million dollars and then earned 949 million dollars at the box office. In addition, the studio is in need of inexpensive productions that report profits after its catastrophic 2023 at the box office.
