The new ‘Lord of the Rings’ film expands the original story: Tolkien didn’t even name the main character – Movie news

The Lord of the rings returns to the big screen in December with The War of Rohirrim, the animated film directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The film tells the story of king helmthe monarch of Rohan after whom the fortress known as Helm’s Deep is named.

Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the scripts for Peter Jackson’s films, produces the film. In addition to recounting in greater detail one of the episodes of Tolkien’s work, Boyens and the screenwriter Phoebe Gittins They have turned a character into a heroine that the writer didn’t even give a name to. “In the appendices where the story comes from, we have these interesting, drawn male characters and this young woman who is never named and I found that very interesting”says Boyens.

That character is Helm’s daughter, who was key in the conflict narrated in the film. “We could feel the weight of being that nameless daughter, which immediately piqued our interest: Who was she? How did she live?”, adds the producer. In The War of Rohirrimthis character is called Hera. Gaia Wise, the actress who voices her, describes her this way:

He would give his life for his people. Comparing her to Arwen and Éowyn, they are already fully formed women. What I loved about Hèra is that she is fierce, complex and rebellious.

If Hèra is the heroine of the story, the villain is Wulf, voiced by Luke Pasqualino. He is the one who leads the army of the Dunlendings against Helm, played by Brian Cox. “We have an exceptionally good antagonist in this story,” Boyens describes. “He’s been one of my favorite antagonists that I’ve written about in all the movies I’ve worked on.”

Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrimwhich opens in theaters on December 13th, is not the only new film in the franchise.
