After the triumph of the far-right in the European Parliament: President of France dissolves the National Assembly and advances the elections

The French far-right party National Group (RN) obtained this Sunday (06/09/2024) almost a third of the votes in France in the elections to the European Parliament, well ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance, according to early estimates. The French Presidency announced that he would address the nation tonight and did so to announce early elections in France.

Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and admitted that the result of the European elections was not positive for his government, although he warned that the rise of nationalism is a danger for both France and Europe. “It is not a good result for the parties that defend Europe,” summarized. “In a few moments I will sign the decree calling the legislative elections, which will be held on June 30 for the first round and on July 7 for the second”, declared the Head of State in a televised speech.

The far-right candidate Jordan Bardella, 28, She obtained between 31.5% and 32.4% of the votes, well ahead of the ruling party’s Valérie Hayer (15.2%), according to Ifop and Ipsos estimates. Bardella was quick to request the dissolution of the National Assembly and the calling of new legislative elections, because today’s result constitutes a “clear rejection” of the policies of the president and his Government. “Emmanuel Macron is a weakened president today,” he told the fervent followers of his party when the poll data became known.

The Socialist Party (PS) can step on the heels of Macron’s party, with 14% of the votes and 13 MEPs. The participation rate, at 52.5%, would be the highest for 20 years for European women in France.

The Rebellious France (LFI), with between 8.1% and 8.7% of the votes; the conservative right of Los Republicanos (7.2%); and the ultranationalist Reconquista (around 5.5%). The environmentalists would be one step away from being left out if they do not reach the minimum required threshold of 5% of votes.
