Washington, May 6 (EFE) .- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, said Tuesday that he asked the US President Donald Trump, to stop referring to Canada as the US number 51.
Carney did not want to go into details during a press conference held at the Canada Embassy in Washington, and he simply confirmed that he had transmitted to Trump that request the meeting that both held today in the US capital.
During the first part of the meeting, held in open for the press in the Oval Office of the White House, Trump said there would be “impressive benefits”, such as “lower taxes” or a “free army”, for Canadians if the country joined the US.
During the subsequent press conference held at the Embassy, the Canadian Prime Minister said that “the President (Trump) has made clear his wish on that issue for a long time” and said that in the meeting held today he insisted “in the difference between a desire and reality.”
-“I have been clear about it both in the oval office and I have been since the beginning of the Canadians: this will never happen. Canada is not for sale and will never be for sale,” said Carney.
When asked about Trump’s response, Carney simply said that American president “agreed” with what he said and that the New York perfectly understands that both neighbors are now maintaining “a negotiation between two sovereign nations.”
Carney and Trump held on Tuesday in Washington their first face -to -face meeting to start negotiations that eliminate tariffs imposed by the United States to their northern neighbor and establish a new bilateral relationship. EFE
