SAN DIEGO — A two-run double by Jake Cronenworth was the key piece in a four-run seventh inning attack by the Padres, who beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Thursday to spoil the Bob Melvin’s return to San Diego.

The Giants played their first game of the season, while the Padres opened it the previous week, when they split honors in a two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul.

Melvin managed the Padres for the last two seasons, before leaving for the Giants with one year left on his contract. He led San Diego to the National League Championship Series in 2022 and led them through a disappointing season that included reports of irreconcilable differences with general manager AJ Preller.

He was replaced by Mile Shildt.

Jung Hoo Lee hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning of his first major league game, giving the Giants a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning.

Yuki Matsui (1-0) took the win and Venezuelan Robert Suárez earned his second save. The defeat was for Luke Jackson (0-1).

For the Giants, Cuban Jorge Soler 3-0. The Venezuelans Wilmer Flores 2-0, Wilmer Flores 2-0, Thairo Estrada 4-1 with one scored.

For the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 4-1, Manny Machado 3-0 with one run scored. Venezuelan José Azocar 2-0.
