Jorge ‘Polilla’ Da Silva, an old idol of scarlet history, is the new technical director of América de Cali, and will take on the challenge for the second half of 2024, after the failure of Venezuelan César Farías in the BetPlay I League and the South American Cup.
It will be Da Silva’s second cycle in America, since he already directed it between September 2017 and March 2018, six months in which he had two very different facets, and which he ended after several controversies and rumors of internal division.
The results accompanied ‘Polilla’ at the beginning, as they reached 11 undefeated games; but then came a crisis that led him to resign. And in the midst of his departure, clear differences between the Uruguayan coach and Tulio Gómez, the current largest shareholder of the Valle del Cauca club, were revealed.

Thus, the fans hope that Tulio has changed his ways, has a better relationship with Da Silva, and has learned from the Uruguayan, who left several pieces of advice for the club.
After resigning from the technical direction of América, Jorge da Silva confirmed that his players never ‘stopped’ him, but, in an interview with TIME In 2018, he launched criticism that implicated the administration of Tulio Gómez.
First, he highlighted the shortcomings that the club had at that time: “I found a reality that was not what I thought, but it is because of all the reality that the club has had to live. There is a lack of serious youth work and infrastructure. Cascajal (sports venue) is as I left it 25 years ago. He is going to fight for titles again, but now it is difficult and it couldn’t be done.”
It can be said that Tulio took note, since a better project was built in minor categories, the sports headquarters was improved and the League titles arrived.
Gómez, along with his daughter Marcela (president of América), is also expected to provide ‘Polilla’ with the reinforcements he requests, since in 2018 he did not do so, according to the Uruguayan’s words: “We requested some players who did not materialize and That’s why there was disagreement. Then there were internal events that showed that we were not on the right path.”
“There were differences between the president and the players. Statements that damaged the group’s internal affairs and today make everyone point their guns at the players. It is difficult for things to work when we begin to divide internally,” the Uruguayan coach confessed at the time.
Furthermore, ‘Polilla’ added: “We had differences with the president (Tulio Gómez). I told him that there were statements from him that were not helpful. When he said that some players were leaving in June and we were in February. “Everyone must take responsibility for what happened.”
Thus, it is expected that there will be a good relationship between the leaders, led by Tulio Gómez, and the coaching staff, led by Jorge ‘Polilla’ Da Silva, to have a successful 2024 in the second semester.
