HOUSTON — Alex Bregman and Yainer Diaz homered in the eighth inning, helping the Houston Astros beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Monday night.

Bregman tied it 4-4 by opening the inning against JoJo Romero (2-1). It was his fifth home run in the last seven games and ninth of the season.

With two out and Jake Meyers on board, Díaz cleared the left field wall for his fourth home run of the year. Chas McCormick then reached on an error by shortstop Masyn Winn and was swept to second before José Altuve’s RBI double.

Dominican Rafael Montero (1-1) got three outs to record the victory and Josh Hader worked the ninth for his ninth save.

Kyle Gibson struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings for St. Louis. He was responsible for three runs and five hits.

For the Cardinals, Panamanian Iván Herrera 3-2.

For the Astros, Cuban Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Dominicans Yainer Díaz 4-1 with one run scored and two RBIs, Jeremy Peña 3-1. Venezuelan José Altuve is 1 for 5 with one RBI. Honduran Mauricio Dubón 3-0 with one scored.
