A teaser in Housemarque’s X handle suggests that a possible Returnal sequel or DLC could be on the way soon. It simply says “tomorrow,” which refers to April 30, the game’s third anniversary.
Housemarque’s Returnal was one of the first AAA PlayStation 5 exclusives to hit shelves shortly after the console’s launch. It was released on April 30, 2021. Two years later, it arrived on PC, once again, as one of the first PS5 exclusives on the platform. The company has now released a cryptic teaser https://twitter.com/Housemarque/status/1784931755931177197tacitly hinting at something related to Returnal. It shows what appears to be the game’s protagonist, Selene, looking through the visor of a helmet.
The announcement of a Returnal because tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the original. The chances of it being DLC are somewhat slim because there isn’t much point in releasing it so late in the release cycle. Returnal fans come out ahead, however, as Housemarque has remained silent following the game’s release. If announced, the putative Returnal sequel is unlikely to release anytime soon.
Earlier this year, Sony already confirmed that none of its first-party titles would have a sequel. Returnal falls under that criteria because Housemarque is wholly owned by Sony. On the other hand, the mysterious game could be an expandalone title (portmanteau of standalone and expansion) like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales or Far Cry: New Dawn. Or it could be something as disappointing as a PS VR 2 port.
