Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and founder of Tango Gameworks, describes Microsoft’s decision to close the studio as “sad”

Shinji Mikami, the acclaimed video game developer, known for being the creator of the Resident Evil saga has referred to Microsoft’s decision to close Tango Gameworks, study founded by him and which he abandoned in February 2023.

Through a brief message on social networks is that the developer referred to the news by pointing out “Tango closed. Sad”.

It is worth remembering that Shinji Mikami founded Tango Gameworks after leaving Capcom in 2010. At the studio, Mikami directed The Evil Within, a game that was released in 2014 for different platforms.

As it was recently learned, Mikami left the studio in order to get away from the survival-horror genre. After leaving Tango Gameworks he founded a new studio under the name Kamui.

Four studios closed

As was known this past Tuesday, May 7, Microsoft made the decision to close four studios: Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Studios and Roundhouse Games.

The news was known through an internal email from Matt Booty, director of Xbox Game Studios, where he informed employees of the decision, pointing out that it is a movement in order to “reprioritize titles and resources.”

In the case of Tango Gameworks, the decision attracted attention since in 2023 they launched the acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush, game that achieved great success and was highlighted by the same people at Microsoft.

After the closure became known, the head of Arkane Lyon, Arkane Austin’s sister studio, Dinga Bakaba, questioned the decision while describing it as “terrible” and pointing out that it is a “stab in the stomach” by Microsoft.

The closure of these studios comes after last January, Microsoft announced the dismissal of 1,900 employees from its video game division, thus affecting Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax and Xbox.
