Both Linux lovers and users of light operating systems will welcome this new update to Linux Lite, a distro focused on speed and simplicity to serve as an entry point to the world of open source for beginners. The final version arrived on June 1, with the name «Galena«.
As indicated by the creator of the distro, Jerry Bezencon, in the Linux Lite forum, «The theme of this Series is maturity. “We have been offering Linux Lite for 12 years and during that time we have integrated many features suggested by the community, as well as building on a solid and secure foundation.”
In its version 7.0, the operating system based on Ubuntu 24.04 is moved to the XFCE desktopwith a new file manager (Thunar 4.18.8), some changes to the welcome screen and new slides in the installation process, as well as other minor changes.
The new system is also compatible with Secure Boot, but as Bezencon suggests, it can become a real headache, so he advises against activating it: “At best, I’m going to say… you should “Disable Secure Boot to enable stress-free work.” It also encourages all users who download the new version to download updates as soon as they install it, by going to Menu > Favorites > Install updates.

An option to leave Windows
These types of Linux distributions, designed to be used by beginner users who have never used Linux before, could gain popularity in the coming months, in the context of decisions by Microsoft that some users of Linux have not liked at all. Windows, who don’t even want to hear about Recall, who don’t want to see advertising in your start menu, or those who are not interested in the new fartificial intelligence anointings that are beginning to invade the devices of the main brands.
Linux Lite can be a simpler option than Linux Mint or Zorin OS for users new to this ecosystem, offering a design reminiscent of Windows XP, and free of all kinds of annoying intrusions or pre-installed software that chases you to use it like that of Windows 11. Linux Lite comes with Google Chrome as its default browser, to which the vast majority of people are already accustomed, and offers the complete LibreOffice office suite as an alternative to Microsoft Office.
