Marvel Rivals: the new Overwatch-style Hero Shooter, do we have a new esport title?

After several rumors and leaks, Marvel and NetEase Games have officially revealed Marvel Rivals. This free-to-play 6v6 third-person shooter, inspired by the style of Overwatch, brings together superheroes from various Marvel comics. Although we’ve only seen a trailer so far, it seems to have the potential to compete with Overwatch on PC.

The game features iconic Avengers characters such as Iron Man and Hulk, as well as X-Men heroes such as Storm and Magneto. The Guardians of the Galaxy also have a notable presence with Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Groot, and Mantis. At the moment, Marvel Rivals has 18 charactersbut NetEase Games plans to add more through updates.

In a statement on Marvel’s website, it was confirmed that Marvel Rivals will include story elements, with Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom facing off against his future counterpart in the year 2099, causing a multiversal collision that brings different versions of characters from the multiverse to the fray. This would serve as an explanation for why different versions of Spider-Man and Iron Man could be fighting each other in team-based PvP combat.

One of the innovations that Marvel Rivals seems to bring to the concept of synergy between heroes is the “Team Skills” mechanism. This allows certain combinations of characters to team up for new tactics and maneuvers, such as Rocket Raccoon riding on Groot’s back while firing his gun, or Hulk charging Iron Man’s suit with Gamma energy. It will be interesting to see if coding these combinations leads players to opt for certain team compositions out of necessity rather than natural choice.

These elements, together with a part that should not go unnoticed, and that is its third-person character, which allows the iconic heroes to be shown in all their splendor and therefore. Having an important element of income such as skins has not made us wonder if the title could become a relevant esports.

It has the elements: players will not be missing, the viewer likes to see everything related to Marvel, skins will be the order of the day and can be an important support element for clubs that want to delve into the title… Marvel does not It is related to this environment but it is not stupid, and we are convinced that if some teams show interest and movement begins to be seen, we could end up seeing a professional competitive in this title.

It’s early and many things still have to happen, including a beta in May, but let’s not lose sight of it.
