GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) – A massive fire destroyed eight apartments, leaving 33 people displaced.

Now, their community is coming together to make sure they have food to eat, clothes to wear, and roofs over their heads.

“That building’s been completely destroyed. It may have to be rebuilt from the ground up, so these folks may be looking for a place to stay for weeks to months,” said the director of Georgetown-Scott County EMA, Michael Hennigan.

Emergency Management has been working alongside community partners to support the eight families displaced by the fire.

“We barely ever have to ask everyone is always ready with what can I do? How do you need it? And how soon can we bring it?” Hennigan said.

Hennigan says many of the displaced people work in the area, including several who work at Texas Roadhouse. Now, the restaurant is collecting donations for them.

“I can say we do have, with employees and families, 10 people and eight children,” said Lucy Hellinger, local store marketer for Texas Roadhouse in Georgetown.

Hellinger says one of their employees just gave birth three weeks ago.

“So, we’re asking for things to accommodate a three-week-old baby girl,” Hellinger said.

They’re collecting items for people of all ages, too, as well as helping to feed the families and putting them up in hotels.

Now, the 33 people who have been displaced are looking for long-term housing. Several groups across the county are collecting monetary donations to support them in their search.

Transform Scott County is a local non-profit organization that is taking the lead to ensure families have a place to stay in the short term. In the coming days, they will continue their work to help them transition to long-term housing solutions. This is the number one need and priority at this time.
