Madrid, May 3 (EFECOM).- Natural gas consumption fell by 3.7% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2023, due to the drop recorded by that destined for electricity generation, which was 22%. .9%.

According to data released this Friday by the Corporation for Strategic Reserves of Petroleum Products (Cores), in the first quarter of the year the consumption of natural gas amounted to 87,091 gigawatt hours (GWh).

Conventional consumption (homes, commerce and industry) increased by 1.8% compared to the first quarter of 2023, to 67,884 GWh; and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for direct consumption by 16.2%, up to 2,712 GWh.

On the contrary, natural gas for electricity generation decreased by 22.9%, to 16,495 GWh.

In March, natural gas consumption, which stood at 26,720 GWh, fell 5.5% compared to the same month a year earlier, given the modest increase in conventional consumption and the sharp drop in consumption destined for electricity generation.

Conventional consumption increased by 0.6% in March and direct consumption LNG by 2.9%; while that destined for electricity production fell by 26.2%.

In March, natural gas consumption was 1.8% lower than in February, although in this case that destined for electricity generation was 2.4% higher.

The decline was due to the fall in conventional consumption, which was 3.2% lower than in February; while that of LNG for direct consumption increased by 6.5%. EFECOM
