The Cauca region is once again shaken by violence, this time with clashes between dissidents and the National Army in Santander de Quilichao, in the north of the department. Videos shared by residents show the harsh reality of people trapped in the crossfire since the afternoon of May 21.

The third division of the National Army reported on the fighting between troops of the Cauca Specific Command and the Dagoberto Ramos and Carlos Patiño dissidents, in rural areas of Santander de Quilichao and Patía, respectively. Despite the continued offensive against these illegal groups, the situation remains volatile and dangerous for the inhabitants of the region.

Unfortunately, the death of one soldier and two uniformed personnel injured in these clashes is confirmed. However, there is still no clarity regarding casualties in the guerrilla group. A preliminary report is expected to shed more light on these events.

Residents of the Las Vueltas village, Mondomo district, say they are exposed to gunfire, according to videos shared on social networks. This new episode of violence could be a response to recent announcements to reinforce security after the attack on the police station in Morales, Cauca.

General Erick Rodríguez, commander of the Joint Command of the Military Forces, told W Radio that the situation in Cauca will continue to be challenging until the department can transform its economy from a coca producer to a legal and stable economy.
