Yellowknife residents can win a Firesmart walkthrough of their property with NWT Fire and Cabin Radio.
Saturday is Wildfire Community Prep Day in the Northwest Territories, with the territory’s wildfire agency promoting various steps people can take to get themselves and their homes ready for the summer.
If you’re not sure where to start Firesmarting your home, or want some guidance on how to make sure your property is as safe as it can be, a self-assessment is a great place to start.
Even better, Cabin Radio and NWT Fire’s Mike Westwick will come and walk through the self-assessment with you to help figure out what you can do right away and the things that might need a bit more planning.

If you win, you agree to allow NWT Fire and Cabin Radio to come visit at a mutually agreed time later in May, and for Cabin Radio to shoot some video during the visit to help other people learn more about Firesmarting and self-assessment.

Notes: We’ll carry out a self-assessment with you but don’t worry, we’re not going to turn up and start thrashing away at your yard – it’s purely an advisory step where we help identify the risks and things you can do. Before you Firesmart a property, you must have the property owner’s permission to make any of the recommended changes or be the property owner yourself. Any Firesmart work must be carried out safely.
