F1 2024 Miami GP Race Summary
The poleman, Max Verstappen, led the pack after turn 1, while his teammate Sergio Pérez overbraked and almost collided with the Ferraris and the Dutchman himself.
Leclerc placed second ahead of Carlos Sainz, but Oscar Piastri (McLaren), who started sixth, took third place from the Spaniard around the outside of Turn 2, while Pérez was fifth, ahead of Norris.
Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) overtook Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, which started on hard tires among a group that was mostly on medium tires, and placed seventh. Further back, the Alpines competed wheel to wheel in turns 13-14-15 and 16 for 13th place, with Pierre Gasly ahead.
Verstappen took Leclerc out of the DRS area, who began to do a little train with Piastri and Sainz very close to him. The Australian passed Leclerc with DRS at Turn 17 at the end of the fourth lap, but was already 2 seconds behind Verstappen.
Pérez was moving away from the leaders and fell into the clutches of Norris. Hamilton regained seventh position by overtaking Hulkenberg at Turn 11 on lap seven, with the Mercedes driver radioing that “we almost had a big accident” when he was pushed into the wall by the German.
But Hamilton blocked six corners later and allowed Hulkenberg to pass him again. They swapped positions again three laps later, with George Russell (Mercedes) also passing the Haas driver at Turn 11 a couple of laps later, who then pitted.
The first of the leading drivers to stop was Pérez on lap 18, while Norris began to harass him for fifth position. With no traffic, Norris immediately set the fastest lap.
Leclerc pitted on lap 20 and rejoined in sixth position behind Hamilton. The Monegasque made an excellent pass on the seven-time champion at turn 11 to avoid losing too much time.
There was drama at the front too, as Verstappen clipped the Turn 15 apex bollard and was lucky not to get caught in the car after initially getting tangled in its front wing and suspension.
That led to a brief period for VSC to safely clear the bollard off the track – but there was no time for either of the leaders to make a “cheaper” pit stop.
Verstappen entered the pits at the end of lap 23, with Piastri in the lead ahead of Sainz and Norris. The Spaniard stopped on lap 28, just before Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and Logan Sargeant (Williams) collided in Turn 3, causing the first and last appearance of the SC (safety car). Sargeant crashed into the wall, but was unharmed.
Norris’ long strategy paid off, as he was able to make a “free” pit stop and climbed to a first position that he never let go of. Pérez entered the pits again and put in another set of means.
Norris led the restart of the race ahead of Verstappen, Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz and Pérez. Yuki Tsuonda took seventh place from Hamilton at turn 11.
Norris took Verstappen out of the DRS zone on the first lap, while Sainz fought hard with Piastri for fourth place, colliding with each other at Turn 11. Moments later, Hamilton passed Tsunoda on the outside of Turn 12.
Norris continued to set impressive times lap after lap and distance himself from the Dutchman, who complained on the radio: “I can’t get the car to turn, it’s a disaster.”
Sainz overtook Piastri for fourth with a touch-in at Turn 17 on Lap 39, and barely managed to stay ahead as the Australian retaliated at Turn 1. Stewards will investigate the collision after the race.
Pérez and Hamilton overtook Piastri, who suffered damage to his front wing when Sainz hit him and was forced to pit.
Norris was intractable in the lead and beat Verstappen by 7.6s, who finished with Leclerc 2s behind.
Sainz was fourth, but will have to pay a visit to the stewards, ahead of Pérez and Hamilton.
Tsunoda finished seventh, ahead of Russell, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Esteban Ocon completed the top ten positions after a great battle.
