MIAMI, Florida – Summer has officially begun and with it, the Memorial Day holiday weekend, so crowds are expected to take to the air and roads to enjoy this mini vacation.

At Miami International Airport, the influx of travelers will increase significantly. More than 160,000 travelers are expected to welcome daily this weekend starting Thursday, representing a 10% increase compared to last year. Mercedes Pérez, one of the travelers, commented on her experience: “I was lucky because I am an American citizen and the lines were short, but the other lines of visitors are going to take at least two hours, they are very full.”

The situation at the airport is noticeably hectic, with a large number of foreigners and flights arriving constantly. Pérez added: “It is quite full, many foreigners arriving, many flights arriving to the point that they were removing the luggage from the carousels without collecting it to give time to put another flight on the carousel.”

Another traveler, Enielfa Montiel, highlighted the length of the lines: “All the lines were very long, we came a little early to get in line before all the people arrive, it is super busy.” José, another passenger, commented: “So far it is working well, I see quite a few people, but good,” while Zulema Olaves added: “There is quite a flow of passengers, there are quite a few people.”

Congestion is not just limited to airports. According to projections from AAA, the emergency highway service, this will be the busiest early summer weekend in almost 20 years. 43.8 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from their homes between Thursday and Monday.

Given this scenario, the most important tips are to be patient and leave early. Travelers also recommend wearing comfortable clothing, good shoes and little luggage to facilitate travel. In addition, it is useful to bring toys, tablets and sweets to entertain the little ones during the long wait.

This weekend promises to be one of the busiest, so preparation and patience will be key to enjoying the summer vacation.
