Macron dissolves the National Assembly and calls legislative elections after the defeat against Le Pen

After the first electoral polls, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has announced that he is dissolving the National Assembly and calling legislative elections in France. The first round will be held on June 30. The second, on July 7. “I cannot act, at the end of this day, as if nothing had happened,” Macron said in a statement from the Elysée. “The rise of nationalists and demagogues is a danger to our nation, and to Europe,” he warned.

“Today the challenges that are presented to us, whether they are external dangers, climate disruption and its consequences, or threats to our own cohesion, these challenges demand clarity in our debates, ambition for the country and respect for each French, For this reason (…), I have decided to once again give you the choice of our parliamentary future through voting. I dissolve the National Assembly tonight,” he announced.

The vote estimates at the closing of the polls have given a large victory to National Regrouping (RN), Marine Le Pen’s ultranationalist right, which would obtain 32.4% of the votes; and the president’s party has suffered severe punishment, with 15.2% of support.
