The bicycle industry in Spain reduces its turnover…

The bicycle industry in Spain has experienced a decrease in its turnover for the second consecutive year. In 2023, the sector registered ua reduction of 8.79% compared to 2022, reaching billing levels higher than those prior to the pandemic, but lower than the record years achieved previously. This decrease affects all categories of the sector, especially bicycles (-10.44%), tools (-8.28%), components (-7.69%), helmets (-6.79%) and textiles ( -6.13%).

Despite this reduction, bicycle production in Spain reached its third best year in history with 301,100 units produced, valued at 245.5 million euros. This result remains solid, along with the level of employment in the sector, with more than 24,000 people working directly in more than 3,300 companies, including 400 manufacturers, importers and distributors.

The electric bicycle has been one of the most resilient categories, recording a 2.28% increase in sales with 241,000 units sold in 2023. However, turnover in this category decreased by 11.32% due to the reduction in the average price of electric bicycles. Despite this, electric bicycles continue to lead in turnover, representing 45.2% of the market, followed by mountain bikes with a 26.3% market share in value.

Among electric bicycles, mountain bikes (141,175 units), urban bikes (62,630 units) and touring bikes (22,858 units) were the most popular. In addition, electric cargo bikes (e-cargo bikes) reached almost 2,500 units sold, a significant increase in this emerging category.

Conventional mountain bikes experienced the biggest decline in sales, going from 468,000 units in 2022 to almost 360,000 in 2023, a decrease of 23.08%. However, this category continues to be the best-selling in Spain, with more than 500,000 units, including electric ones.

The average price of bicycles sold in Spain stabilized in 2023, reaching 1,139.15 euros, an increase of 1.65% compared to 2022. Although decreases were observed in the average price of categories such as electric bicycles (-13, 3%), urban (-16.72%) and gravel (-10%), mountain and road bikes saw increases in their prices, standing at 997 euros (+7.55%) and 2,645 euros (+4 .57%) respectively.

The bicycle sector in Spain, represented by the Association of Brands and Bicycles of Spain (AMBE), continues to face challenges such as the absence of tax incentives and aid for the purchase of bicycles at the state level. Despite these challenges, production and employment in the sector have remained stable, reflecting the resilience of the industry in a year of strong adjustments.
