Although the government of Javier Milei had pressed to repeal law 27,637 as part of the reforms of the Base Law, the Gas subsidy will be maintained due to the modifications introduced in the Senate that ensured the continuity of the “Cold Zone” regime, which It benefits gas users in numerous municipalities in the province of Buenos Aires.

Amid the increases in gas and electricity rates announced by the Buenos Aires Undersecretary of Energy, Gastón Ghioni, the Trust Fund for subsidies for residential Gas consumption was one of the few that was saved from elimination. This exception means that gas subsidies will be maintained for the coldest areas of the country, relieving many users.

The national government expected Congress to eliminate several trust funds as part of the Bases Law reforms. However, the surplus was due to the retention of these funds, as in the case of the cold areas fund.

The recently announced increases in gas rates will leave bills as follows in the province of Buenos Aires: for category N1 (high income) an average increase of 299%, for N2 (low income) 604%, and for N3 (average income) 367%. These increases make maintaining cold zone subsidies even more crucial for affected users.

The Cold Zone Regime, established by Law 27,637, benefits 77 municipalities and 90 towns in Buenos Aires, recognizing and subsidizing excessive gas consumption due to low winter temperatures. This regime also extends to other Patagonian provinces, providing essential relief to households during the coldest months of the year.

The list of beneficiary municipalities includes, among others, 9 de Julio, Bragado, Chacabuco, Chivilcoy, Alberti, 25 de Mayo, 9 de Julio, Adolfo Alsina, Bahía Blanca, General Pueyrredón, and Tandil. The continuation of these subsidies ensures that residents in these areas will continue to receive the support necessary to manage high heating costs during the winter.
