Coxabengoa has been awarded the first phase of what will be the largest desalination plant in Taiwan, with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day, as reported this Thursday by the company, which highlighted that with this first award in the country it strengthens its portfolio. in Asia and the Middle East. The group – which integrates the Cox business and the assets of Abengoa – is working to debut on the market at the end of the year, with the objective of addressing a capital increase with which to finance the business plan it presented when it rescued the Andalusian group. .

The plant, located in Tainan, south of Taiwan, will provide drinking water to one million people in a country with a great need for water for human consumption, as well as meet the water needs for the semiconductor industry on the island.

The project contemplates the execution and operation for 15 years of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant for the Water Resources Agency, dependent on the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, as the final client, according to Europa Press.

The construction and start-up of the plant, which will employ 200 people at the time of greatest intensity of the process, will be carried out in two phases.

In the first phase, the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per day will be reached and it will be prepared for the second phase, in which 200,000 cubic meters will be reached.

Since the award of Abengoa’s assets by Grupo Cox in April 2023, the Coxabengoa team has focused on reorganizing the business and assets and transforming the company into a global water and energy utility.

Thus, the infrastructure/transmission lines areas have been integrated, along with the operation and maintenance area, to support the group’s main businesses.

In addition to the award of the desalination plant in Taiwan, Coxabengoa has put into operation ‘Taweelah’, the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

With a production of almost one million cubic meters per day, the ‘Taweelah’ plant guarantees supply to approximately four and a half million people throughout the year.

This plant is the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to a photovoltaic installation of 70 megawatts peak (MWp) of power, which allows the desalination plant to be self-sufficient in renewable energy.
