The elected president of Mexico, Claudia Sehinbaum, announced this June 20 to Rosaura Ruiz Gutierrez as the person who will be in charge of the new Secretariat of Sciences, Humanities, Technology and Innovation once she assumes the Presidency on October 1, 2024, this during a press conference in which she presented part of her cabinet.
Who is Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez?
Rosaura Ruiz was born in Mexico City on July 7, 1950 and is a Mexican biologist, professor, researcher and academic with a career in the scientific and educational field. She obtained her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) where she has been a researcher and teacher, as well as director of the Faculty of Sciences of the highest university between 2010 and 2017.
Among her studies she also has a postdoctoral degree at the University of California (Irvine), where she has also been a visiting professor.
She sought the rectorship of UNAM in 2015 and 2018 and was president of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, becoming the first woman to preside over said institution.
In 2018 and until 2023 he was part of the government of the Mexico City where she served as secretary of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of the capital alongside the now president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
The future head of the Secretariat of Sciences, Humanities, Technology and Innovation has received awards such as the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2004.

The work of this institution will be to strengthen scientific and technological research in strategic areas for the development of the country, promote technological innovation, promote the dissemination of science and technology as well as establish links with federal entities and countries on the subject.
