BOGOTA —

Millonarios announced on Wednesday the hiring of forward Radamel Falcao, who will reinforce the Bogotá team for the second half of the season.

With a video on their social networks, the blue club confirmed the signing of the top scorer in the history of the Colombian national team, who at 38 years old will be part of the team of which he is a fan.

In the publication, Millonarios recalled a phrase uttered by Falcao in which he recognized his love for the “ambassador” painting.

“Everyone knows that Millonarios is the team of my heart, of my childhood,” is heard in the video that shows the attacker at different moments in his career identifying with the club from the Colombian capital.

Falcao arrives at Millonarios after finishing his contract at Rayo Vallecano, with whom he played 80 games and scored 12 goals in three seasons.

The extensive negotiation to close the agreement came to fruition in Miami with Falcao’s handshake with Gustavo Serpa and Enrique Camacho, directors of the institution.

The contract was signed for six months, with the option of an extension. The player is expected to arrive in Bogotá in the coming days to join the preseason of the team led by Alberto Gamero.

A friendly match is scheduled for July 9 in Buenos Aires against River Plate, a team in which Falcao played between 2005 and 2009.

Falcao’s official debut could take place in mid-July on the first day of the Colombian League, in which Millonarios will visit Independiente Medellín.

Falcao will become one of the most important signings in the history of Colombian football, joining former world figures who have played in this country, such as Alfredo di Stéfano, Adolfo Pedernera and Mané Garrincha.

HISTORICAL DEBUTANT

The striker from Santa Marta will play for the first time in the Colombian first division.

After debuting with Lanceros Boyacá of the second division in 1999 and after completing some training with the Millonarios professional team, he moved to the River Plate youth team, where he began a career of almost two decades away from his country.

In his successful journey through European football, he lived his best years with Porto and Atlético de Madrid, with whom he won the Europa League twice (2011 and 2012), a tournament that has him as the second highest scorer in history, with 30 goals. .

YOUR GOALS ARE NEEDED

Millonarios recently closed a semester in which it did not meet expectations. After obtaining his 16th star in 2023 and the Super League at the beginning of the year, he could not overcome the group stage of the Copa Libertadores and was left out in the home runs of the first tournament of the course.

In his new club, Falcao will share a dressing room with the experienced David Mackalister Silva and goalkeeper Álvaro Montero, who is called up by Colombia for the Copa América.

The attack has been one of Millonarios’ weak points at the beginning of the season, after the loss of Leonardo Castro due to injury and the youth of its other offensive players.
