To contain inflation, the Government postponed the electricity and gas increases planned for July

The Government decided not to increase electricity and gas rates during the month of July in order to contain inflation during winter, a season in which consumption increases.

As published in Ambit the journalist accredited at Casa Rosada Liliana Francothe measure was taken, in principle, only for the July rates, in order to sustain the recovery of the purchasing power of the population, and It will only apply to home consumption.

Depending on the billing date, in principle most users would pay the increase in August.

“If a consumer spent exactly the same amount in June as in July, his bill will have the same amount to pay,” explained the Ministry of Energy. If consumption decreases, he will pay less. However, it should be noted that the June bill includes a previously announced increase.

The increases already announced for June

At the beginning of this month, the national government lowered the maximum subsidized consumption limits for electricity and gas and the bonuses on wholesale prices of electricity and natural gas for N2 (low income) and N3 (middle income) users for “contribute to fiscal balance without neglecting help for vulnerable users”.

This was established by Resolutions 90/2024 and 91/2024 of the Ministry of Energy. In this way, a process was initiated “process to move from a generalized subsidy regime to a targeted one” and promote “efficient and responsible use of energy”.

The Government clarified that specific subsidy regimes such as Social Tariff and Cold Zone were maintained, and noted that Users who have already requested their inclusion in the Energy Subsidy Access Registry (RASE) will not have to register again.

In addition, for the Public Benefit Entities, Neighborhood and Town Clubsand other categories of non-profit users, discounts are applied to the price of natural gas and electricity for low-income users (N2) for the total volume consumed.

Based on this regulation and as an example, taking an average consumption of 250Kw, the increase in the different categories will be:

  • N 1 (high income): A bill of $24,710 to $30,355 pesos (increase of 23%). In July, if the same consumption is maintained, the bill will pay the same amount, i.e. $30,355. This covers a universe of 1.5 million households.
  • N 2: (low income) goes from an average bill of $6,295 to $12,545,260 (99% increase). Comprises 1.9 million users.
  • N3 (average income) from $6,585 to $16,850 (156% increase). It includes 1 million clients.

It should be noted that N1 has no limits in electrical energy. N3 counts 250 kWh/month (400 kWh/month was replaced); N2 will have a maximum subsidizable consumption of 350 kWh/month.

In the case of gas rates, consumption in July will not increase either. That is to say, the user will pay exactly the same as in June, as long as their consumption is the same.

According to the official communication, increases in the established gas tariff schedule of 9.2% for the N1 segment, 33% for N2 and 10% for N3 were established for the current month.
